Music in the Western World: A History in Documents Selected and Annotated by Piero Weiss and Richard Taruskin Publ. Schirmer Books. ISBN: 0-02-872900-5 I picked it up in a used book store. It's not necessarily a sit down and read from cover to cover book, but it is great to just pick up now and then and turn to a page and see what is there. It is a collection of period documents written by, for, and about music and musicians. It includes such things as Bach's obituary written by C.P.E and Agricola, Excerpts from letters and writings by Monteverdi, Mozart, Schumann, Chas. Ives, etc. Reviews, music theory and history as written during the period, etc. It is sort of fun if you like that sort of thing (and I couldn't go too far wrong for $1.00US. Scott
