Very rare transcription from Meyerbeer's Robert le Diable ( a sample version of the original aria is here - ) Liszt also transcribed the aria; other than that I don't know of any other versions. sheet music: http://imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/14452 I changed Kullak's harmony in the middle of the second last line of the last page - alert listeners may spot there's a Db in the aria version above which is not present in his arrangement.
Dear Andrew, what a beautiful sound! Where (and on what instrument) did you do the recording? I like the dramatic part in the middle/towards the end best. Before that, there are some tiny spots where the melody could be more present (but, after all, the piano is not a singer). Thanks for sharing! Jan
Hi Jan, this was recorded on a Steinway D in the symphony concert hall in Dundee, Scotland. It is part of a project to record a commercial CD of operatic transcriptions/paraphrases - I hired the hall for two days and did as many takes of the various pieces as possible. This is my working copy of this piece after preliminary edits; I think it can probably be improved with some further judicious editing, but I won't start on that until I have all the pieces edited to working copy level, which is a somewhat time-consuming process.
Yes, it seems absolutely to be a promising project! I´m enthused and at most places you bring out the melody line very well! Also the arpeggios (especially also the thin printed ones) are played in the sense of the great virtuosos of 19th century: with a large and full "bow". You seem to feel that in a congenial way. Continue so! I will upload it right now...
