Thanks Monica for listening and for the interesting story about Liszt. I knew you enjoy studying the lives of composers. But I didn't know that I would take advantage of your studying :D I would agree that this piece has more feminine character than the other Scherzos. For ex. Michelangeli's rendition on YouTube is very graceful and romantic, like a performance of a elegant lady. But this is an exception, so far as I can say from my listening to all well-known pianists playing this piece on YouTube today. Other pianists play this quite differently.
At listening I thought that except Pletnev (his performance is really original and individual!)Michelangeli and Berezovsky (to be honest - he is one of my favorites - his playing was terrible... completely and without emotions... even though I knew already he plays sometimes so, when he isn't fully relaxed yet) nearly every pianist has a very similar concept about this piece. What would you say about that, Monica, or other friends? Does this piece come under those which allow a very small room of interpretation to its performer? (Actually I had this thought since I've found this piece as I was a middle school girl  )
Oh, I didn't know that you have a problem with your wrist! Did you get the problem from learning this piece? I hope you'll be completely recovered from it :!:

Oh, I had never listened to other people' playing seriously, as I had been playing piano for 14 months. So I'm sure you are playing certainly much better than me at that time :D
Have much fun with your Bach and at making your recordings!

Beyond Zimerman and Michelangeli, whose performances are of ageless beauty, my favourite is Fabio Bidini, who plays as Liszt may have done, with terrific virtuosity and opulent sound.

It’s funny, but I don’t feel that way about this scherzo. The 4th Scherzo sounds more ‘feminine’ to me. I’m probably just weird, though. As far as interpretation goes – I have to admit that although I ‘like’ this piece, I don’t ‘love’ it so I have never taken time to compare different pianists.

Yes. I practiced it so hard with poor hand position and other bad habits. My current teacher is trying very hard to help me correct some of them.

Thanks, but unless I stop using the computer and playing piano, it’s not going to happen. :(

He certainly wastes no opportunity to wave his arms around in the grand manner, and he sure can play that coda faster than anyone else. Very nice if you like that kinda stuff.

No comment on the latter assessment
But I agree on the scherzi. I love the fourth most of all even though it may be not as headstrong as the other ones. For me it's (almost) on a par with the Barcarolle, the 4th Ballade, the 3rd Sonata, and the late Nocturnes.

Nah... except maybe the Clayderman/Dudley Moore hairdo... But I bet the ladies love it.

Thank you Alfonso for this link! It is a incredibly great performance indeed!! (I didn't know him, so I didn't check this video  ) Moreover it's the most exciting performance of the piece on YouTube, I must say :D
He shows the core of this piece very successfully, I think. Personally I'm not terribly fond of the renditions of Zimerman and Michelangeli on YouTube. Admittedly they are very beautiful indeed, however, somehow I woudn't like to listen to them again.
Anyway, after watching too many videos where the big hands seem to fly through this Scherzo without any difficulty, I'm a little bit discouraged :(

Yes Monica, the fourth is in a sense "feminine", too. But Chris, I'd like to exclude the 3rd sonata from the side  Isn't it enough "headstrong", even though a sonata is a complex which consists of different movements and characters?

I don't love it yet, either. Before learning it I even don't like it. But now I like it, so it's not impossible for me to fall in love with it someday  Actually I just wanted to listen to the right rhythm at the opening to correct my bad habit and found many videos on YouTube.
Oh, these are exactly what you're doing for PS :?
