Here are two new spontaneous, free-style improvisations I recorded this month, May 2009. When I have time, I'll expand them into larger and more formal compositions later on... Much later at this rate!

    1. Over The Mountains: Nostalgic fervor
    2. Meditation: Slight variations on a theme.

(Sorry for the degradation in the timbral and tonal characteristics of the midrange due to the mp3 conversion. I am amazed how many people listen to i-pods at even a worse sampling rate than this. Oh well, I hope it's still enjoyable).

    Hi again, George.

I just listened to these. I really like the first one - love the harmonies.

The second one is very pretty, but I couldn’t help thinking that a little bit of some kind of dramatic upswing would be nice in the middle – or more like early middle, then another even more dramatic peak near the end before you come down again. I know beans about composing and improvising though, so please don't get mad at me if you disagree. These are both nice pieces and I will put them up shortly.

Thank you Monica for the candid advice. You're absolutely right, the 4 variations don't offer much in the way of giving way to any fervor in the middle section. There is definitely room for development. It's very easy to get carried away and harp on a theme when you're recording. That's why I love recording these things, two heads are better than one when it comes to open discussion.

BTW - it doesn't affect my ego if I receive criticism in good faith. My music teacher once told me "there are those who know that they don't know, and there are those who don't know that they don't know." I belong to the former category - always listening, and learning. Hey, I carry that philosophy in my work too.

I belong in that category as well. But be careful if you carry that philosophy to work with you. If I were your patient, I would not want you to learn how to do some procedure on me while I am lying right there in your chair. (ouch! )

I have put up your "Over the Mountains" recording. Do you still want me to put up "Meditation"? Maybe we should wait and see if we get more opinions - is that all right with you?

I have changed my mind and put up Meditation too. It's so pretty and we can always replace it if you ever change it.

Also one more thing - a little reminder to please use a lower compression number. We like something below 220 kbps.

Thanks Monica, for your comments and for taking the time to post the recordings. I'll try to keep it under 220kbps too.

Ha! I those were only during the early days as a student in dental school! Not now though.
Seriously, listening and learning can never stop as we are required by law to take 40 credits every 2yrs. In an ever changing technological climate, I love learning about the latest techniques, treatment options, and newest materials.... There we are, now that the "novacaine" has taken effect, we're ready to start...
