Piano Quartetts

Piano Quartets

The two Piano Quartets composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart represent the first major pieces composed for piano quartet (piano, violin, viola and cello) in the chamber music repertoire. Mozart received a commission for three quartets in 1785 from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister. Hoffmeister thought the first quartet in G minor was too difficult and that the public would not buy it so he freed Mozart from the obligation of completing the set. Nine months later, Mozart composed a second quartet in E flat major anyway.
