Louis Moreau Gottschalk composed his Concert Paraphrase " The Union" in 1862 as expression of his support and loyalty for the
preservation of the 'Union' (the United States) during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Although Gottschalk
was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, he very much opposed the secessionist movement
of the 11 Southern States. Nonetheless, he always identified himself as a New Orleans native in public speaking and concerts.
