Red Indian Diary

Red Indian Diary

While on a concert tour in 1910, Busoni visited a former student who introduced him to her collection of American Indian melodies. Captivated by the spirituality and haunting wistfulness of the melodies, Busoni composed four studies on motifs of the North American Indians. He states the tunes with unadorned accompaniments, then turns each into a mystical rumination.
