Ralph Vaughan Williams, England's greatest symphonist, composed a rather good piano concerto but very little for solo piano. From the few works that appeared in print, the ones presented here are the most well-known.
The Fantasia on 'Gleensleeves' (a popular 16th century English folk song) was adapted from his opera Sir John in Love (1924-28)
The Lake in the Mountains (1940-41) is based on music from the film '49th Parallel' (Vaughan Williams was a prolific file composer) and was dedicated to Phyllis Sellick.
