This set of variations on Arcangelo Corelli's famous 'La Folia' theme (from Corelli's violin sonata Op.5 No.12) was written in 1932 and dedicated to Fritz Kreisler.
On closer examination, this set contains two series of parallel variations, generally of a parallel construction, separated by an intermezzo and concluded by an introspective coda.
More forward-looking than Rachmaninov's other output, this mighty and ingenious set of variations has never become quite as popular, but yet it is arguably one of his finest solo piano works.
