Number 25 of Tveitt's Hardanger Tunes. This was my first serious classical playing in several months, I've been playing lots of jazz and mainly focusing sine last July on composing a musical, which was done in a staged reading a month ago and will be performed for real this May.

    Ponce biography coming evantually

Tveitt - 50 Hardanger Tunes - 25: The Call of the Dairy Maid (1:32)

    Hi Chase,
I don't know this composer. This is what I gather from your performance: lonliness, isolation, resolution, a man who has sadly (but not despairingly) come to terms with his mortality. Your playing was sensitive and restrained. If this was your objective (I hope it was) you achieved it very admirably. Thank you for the introduction (for me) to Tveitt.

Yeah, right - we've heard that before.... :p

But this gives me a chance to ask for volunteers to write a bio or two. If anyone here, especially you newer members would like to write one, let me know and I'll tell you which ones are missing.
(Espla is still on my plate...)

I suppose I could try one or two. I shall take a look and see which are missing and wish I could do.

You don't have to look; I said I would tell you which ones are missing....

    Here is the list:

    - Janacek
    - Lutoslawski
    - Martinu
    - Mayerl
    - Nepomeceno
    - Ponce
    - Oswald
    - Respighi
    - Saint-Saens
    - Tveitt
    - Ralph Vaughn Williams
    - Peter Warlock
    - Alexei Stanchinsky
    - Oscar Espla (I'm doing)
    - Marc-Andre Hamelin

Besides you, Richard, I hope some others will step up and write a bio. It does not have to be long, but we do like when the bio is written with your own words rather than cut and pasted from a encyclopedia.

It's nice to be able to put a musical face to a composer who I only knew of by name. Thanks for the upload!

I've read through the Op.40 Etudes and am particularly attracted to #3, Toccatina. Tough stuff, but I think there's a trick to playing his music, I just haven't figured it out yet. It has to do with the rhythmic phrasing, I think.

That's a very strong reaction, clearly I did something right here. Question; who's lonely, isolated and resolute, Tveitt or me? I'm curious...

Yeah, I'm a slacker  I will write this evantually, just need the free time and motivation. The Gavota will probably come before the bio, maybe both at the same time, we'll see.

Ah, but I do need to look Monica! I have to look at your list!

At first glance I might try Janacek (I once prepared a lecture on him: I just hope I still have the material), Vaughan Williams and Nepomuceno (I know a thing or two about him which is not published elsewhere). Maybe Oswald too, come to think of itr, but I shall confirm the latter.

Let us hope I can deliver.

A striking similarity indeed. You'd almost think they were related.
It's not a very nice pic of Tveitt I chose though. Not even very characteristic, his features are a bit finer than this.

I enjoyed this one very much. I'd like to comment a bit on your chords which I found impressive. The authoritative playing indicates that you have fully digested the harmonic content in these. Big plus for a pianist, if you ask me.
Great but short. I hope you plan to record more of this composer.
