This spring I posted an initial effort on Stephen Houghs Broken Branches here, and got a (well deserved) response that my playing is a bit dull. In particular Alexander Hanysz remarked that if I want gloomy I should make sure to make it fairy-tale gloomy, as in the atmosphere of a Miyazaki film. Now I love Spirited Away and remember well the feeling in it (though nothing of the soundtrack), and continued to work on it with this in mind. Efforts were at first sporadic but lately I have made more progress and I hope to post soon.

I always take care to practice on my grand only when no one else is in the house, and my family does not really know nor care what I am playing. But a few weeks ago I worked on the prelude while my daughter was in the kitchen. At dinner she asked me, "Dad, what were you playing today? It sounds just like music from Spirited Away."
