    These are not 'symbols' but double notes. You sometimes see them to fill a complete 4/2 of 8/4 bar.
    They represent different permutations of the ASCH theme, a these assiciated with Clara's birthplace Asch, and featuring prominently in Carnaval. The concensus is that they should not be played.
