I recorded the other 4 pieces in this opus some years ago, and finally decided to invest the time to complete the set.
I recorded this with the lid down in order to cut down on the percussiveness of the middle section.
As usual: 5'10" Petroff, Zoom H2 recorder.

Nice, I really like the jazzy feel of this one!

The only part that was a bit odd was near the end at like 3:58ish - 4:02ish. I don't know this piece, but the downward runs seemed a bit clunky/could have been smoother. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be played that way or not.

Very good Stu, and kudos to have another complete set on the site (I'll upload it later). I think it's a pity you are closing the lid. If the music is percussive in places, then so be it, there is no need to make amendments for that IMO. Also the sound is just a little dry, a bit more opulence would have been nice. This sounds like quite a tricky piece, and the few little fluffs are unimportant, except the one wrong note in the final flourish which would otherwise have been just perfect.

An interesting piece, and well played, although it is not easy. In your interpretation, I miss dynamic contrasts a little bit. For example, the contrast between the opening section (Allegretto) and the following (Allegro molto agitato) could be made clearer.
I think Chris is right about the closed lid.

    Hi Stu,

    A really fine performance.
You did an excellent job blending both the jazzy and lyrical components.

Thanks to all for listening, and Chris also for the lovely box around the set. I worked on this on and off for some years before having the nerve to do it in front of a mic; maybe that's what it takes.

I wanted the mic close to the treble in order to pick up those really high notes but was afraid of getting the sound of the hammers hitting the strings. Next time I have a piece like this I think I'll try lid up but angle the mic away from the hammers.

    Hi Stu,

This was a really nice performance, and "new music" too, at least for me. At the opening the chords seemed a bit tart. This really gets one's attention! Very nice playing. And I noticed in the thread here that you've completed a full set. Congratulations!

    Hi Stu,
that´s a lovely piece and I like also the whole cycle.
From my view the "basics" concerning the so called objective aspects like right notes tempo etc. are o.k. (except that you could consider the break before the Allegro molto vivace), but there is a lack of expression respective dynamic differences.
But thanks for having done the piece. Strauß was a genius. ;D
