Question about temperature environment

I am accepting delivery on my very first grand piano on February 12! One of the deals I made with my (non-playing) wife is that she will be able to continue her habit of setting our automated thermostat to 60 degrees at night. Will a 10 degree swing between every night and day affect the quality and durability of the instrument? How much more often will I have to have it tuned than if I kept it at a constant 70 degrees?

 

It will also depend on the heating in the environment. With the weather changing constantly depending on where you live, it will effect the piano. For example in NYC currently the weather has fluctuated frequently and some clients have needed their piano tuned 3x this winter.

Temperature is the enemy of the Piano. The cold can weaken delicate wooden parts, and using a piano in this condition can cause these parts to snap. Heat can negatively affect the strings and can loosen the felt on the hammers. Room Temperature (70-72 F, 21-22 C) is ideal.

• Keep your piano away from an exterior wall. If no other space is available, position the piano at least two feet away from it.
• Regulate the room’s temperature with an air conditioner or heater, but keep the piano at a distance from both.
