    Hello,
I am currently trying to find a copy of Prokofiev's op. 38---the original "5th Sonata", as opposed to op. 135, his revision.
This revision is in the Dover collection and is also in another collection, even though it is marked "op. 38" at the top.

The recording that Yefim Bronfman plays of this is quite interesting, because it appears that in bar 20 of the 3rd movement, he plays a melody that is clearly not what is written in the right hand (and it sounds about a billion times better than what is written, I might add). I'm trying to find if he's playing the op. 38 but can not find a score.

The Musical Times vol. 144 no. 1882 (2003) has an article called " Prokofiev's Op. 38 and Op. 135: Crowning the Opus" and it goes over the differences between the 3rd movement, but oddly enough, it does NOT mention anything about this melody change....I'm learning this for my recital and really want to learn what Bronfman does without resorting to transcribing it myself...I'd feel more comfortable if I knew that Prokofiev had something to do with it.

If you have any help, or can at least point me in the direction of a copy of op. 38 (the real op. 38), that would be wonderful.
Please let me know by responding to this thread...thanks
    Rich

    Hi Rich

The complete edition of the nine sonatas by Boosey and Hawkes, published in the 1980s definitely has the Op 38 version with the original text - I much prefer the original. Volume 1 finishes with the fifth.
