this is sort of related to piano, since many of us print sheet music off our printers.

I need a new printer/scanner/copier and would like to know if any of you have a certain preference as to printer manufacturers. I've done some research, but can't decide. HP, Epson, Canon, Brother...they all have various models which have received favorable and not so favorable reviews. But now I am overwhelmed with having so many choices.

So, do you like your current printer? What kind is it and can you tell me how often you need to buy new ink (ink cartridge replacement is a big issue)?

Hope this helps! (OK, I know it doesn't  ) And still...

Anyway, I strongly recommend a small multifunction laser printer. Samsung makes very fine ones.

Oh, I didn't know Samsung even made printers! I just two days bought a Samsung refrigerator, so I could match it with a printer too and be very well-coordinated!

But I know nothing about laser printers - I've had only ink-jet printers and go through them about as fast as I go through vaccuums. Maybe laser printers are longer-lasting! And what about the ink? Do you still need to buy ink cartridges?

I too have recently bought a Samsung fridge and I am very satisfied with it.

You periodically need to replace the toner cartridge and it's more expensive than an ink cartridge. But what really counts is the so called Total Cost of Ownership. The TCO of a B&W laser printer (I'm assuming that you are into having a monochrome printer) is considerably less than that of a inkjet. Here's some rough math on the cost per page:

That's good to know! I read in Consumer Reports that Samsung refrigerators were ranked no. 1 in customer satisfaction. So far, I like mine too. I got one of the kinds with three doors - that's new for me; we always had the kind with two doors.

Thanks for the info about laser printers. I did not consider having a printer that prints in only black and white. I'll have to think about that.

    Missed this post earlier.
After getting fed up with being ripped off bying inkjet cartridges every couple of monts, I bought a Samsung SCX-4200 all-in one black-and white laserprinter (copy/scan/print). It's a bit noisy and the powerswitch is stupidly located at the back of the rear. But it works great, even after having said for weeks that the toner cartridge is empty (I guess it's reaaly on its last leg, as it starts to smell a bit).
This is good value for money. The initial 1000-page cartridge took me an awful long way. A new (3000-page) cartridge isn't even that much more expensive than a B&W inkjet cartridge.

The great thing about a laserprinter is that the cardridge doesn't get clogged up when you don't use it for a while.

I ended up buying another inkjet printer - this time a Canon all-in-one scanner/copier/printer. So far it works well and the price was good. I had to watch that because I also bought a new monitor. But now I need a new computer (just the tower) so I'm shopping for that now. I'm curious to find out if Windows 7 is much different/better than Vista.

Sure these things are cheap, and good value for money too. That is, up until you need new cartridges which cost almost as much as the whole darned printer did. Well the same is true for laserprinter toner cartridges, but they last about, I guess, at least 5 times longer.
Also, a laserjet can print much faster than an inkjet, and I think it will last longer as it has fewer moving parts.

Do they make those kind of 'knock-off' cartridges for the laser printers like they do for the inkjets?

Not sure what you are referring to exactly.
But contrary to what I thought, you can get refill kits for laser toners.

There are companies who put out ink cartridges that fit the major manufacturers' printers, but they are only a fraction of the cost. (You find them only on the Internet.) Over here, a typical price for a black cartridge by HP, Epson, Canon etc. is about $20 but these other guys sell them for about $7.00. I tried these other replacement cartridges, but I think that may have been what killed my printer. I can't be sure about that, but I am going back to buying the name-brand cartridges again.

Ok, that sounds good. :) I'd never have to leave my room. (one thing missing, though. My piano!)

I've had bad luck with third party cartridges myself. They don't last near as long - I seemed to be replacing them 3 or 4 times as often. I've had them leak as well as other horrors.

I've always had a deskjet and mywife bought one of those do-it-yourself-at-home refill kits ... Unfortunately, Aryth got into the desk and found the ink bottles   well, to make a long story short, it took about 2 weeks for the ink stains on her legs and hands and feet to wear off!

    Re:

I have a Samsung laser printer, cause I have to print a lot of documents for my dissertation works. And it is of course very suitable to print the sheet music, too. I use a refilled toner now after its original toner got empty, and it still works very well (and economic, too).

Hey I like that kind of geeky humour (though I cannot say I got all the jokes there :)). Especially liked when the guy replaces the desktop icons with the screen capture. Thanks for that, Chris, I'll be watching the other episodes within a few days !

Haha yes, that is priceless isn't it ! I love that kind of stuff too, especially when it is about tech support (which is what I do).
