    At first, I thought you were playing on a digital keyboard. I guess the mics were very close to the strings or something, because it sounds a little tinny. Also, the balance between your hands sounded to even to me....like all the secondary chords coming down repeatedly in the right hand were of equal volume to what the left hand was doing with the melody. I noticed this mostly in the beginning, though. Maybe the mics were too close to the upper register? But anyway...Wow, you sure played the heck out the ending sections! Great job, Andrew!! It's on the site.

    It was a six foot grand; the bass was somewhat lacking in power and the treble was quite bright, which may explain your impressions. Tbh, my balance between the bebung chords and the melody is the thing I'd be most inclined to criticise about the performance.

    This is a fine rendition of the "Vallee d'Obermann". I've recorded it myself, so know the challenges there. Great playing of a wonderful piece!

    Thanks! Yes, it is a tremendous piece. One of those pieces that truly gives the lie to the notion that (the young) Liszt was all flash and no subsstance.

    I agree with Monica, those bass notes in the beginning are really not in balance.

    I don't know this piece in details, but I have heard it's considered one of the most difficult Liszt pieces!

    This is a wonderful performance.
    I don't know the piece and won't attempt any other comment, especially since it's live and we can't always control technical aspects during live recordings.
    Comes across great through speakers, BTW.

    The first line in particular isn't good at all for balance, the bass on the piano was slightly weak which didn't help but in truth the chords should simply be quieter anyway. I was a little undecided about how I was going to play it: I wanted to bring out the minor second movement in the inner part and that subconsciously affected my attitude to the chord volumes. Probably just something that needs more thought and work. There are some left hand before right mannerisms but, whilst some people frown on this device, they are mostly intentional.

    In terms of technical demands, it's not superhumanly difficult Liszt - in some ways it's quite accessible - but it's obviously not trivial either. Thanks to both of you for listening.

    Andrew, I rejoice in hearing you play some real, er, serious, music at last :) And a very respectable performance it is. The main gripe indeed is that your repeated chords are too loud over that beautiful quasi cello line at the start and elsewhere.
    The couple of smudges do not disturb much, you are very good at making them sound as if they were intended (I guess that is an essential skill for any performing artist). I have the feeling though that you are not completely comfortable playing this. In several places
    I find it a bit subdued, as if you silently apologize for the lack of flashy writing. I also notice a tendency to roll chords that are
    probably not meant to be. Intersing to hear you playing the ossia at 12:58, I'd never heard that ( I think the default bars are more
    interesting).

    Save from some tricky octave runs, this is indeed not a staggeringly difficult piece in the league of Dante or Mephisto. I'd say it
    is moderately difficult Liszt.

    Curious, what you call the ossia is the main score in my edition, and it has what you find normal as an ossia!

    Yeah, I'm not all that happy with the repeated chords. I'm actually quite at home in the piece in general though. I've maybe overdone trying to put across a sense of stillness, resignation and desolation prior to the storm passages, or just not been expressive enough about it. I often feel that the better a pianist you are, the more slowly you can play such things and still be effective. It was my first time on stage with this piece and my views might change or develop with time. I'd have to go through it and check for rolled chords; I know I was doing some left before right mannerisms, but most of those were in specific pre-selected places.

    Funny thing is, I don't think Dante or Mephisto are staggeringly difficult ;) I've played through both and whilst I think Mephisto is harder (Dante only the second last page bothers me), there's some really difficult Liszt kicking around (a few transcriptions for example spring to mind) that put them into context.
