Murad Kazhlayev, a composer and conductor, was born in Baku, Russia in 1931. He graduated from the Baku State Conservatory. There he studied composition with Boris Zeidman. Kazhlayev was a teacher at the Tchaikovsky Music School in Makhachkala. He was the chief conductor of the Dagestan Radio Symphonic Orchestra and later the Artistic Director of the Dagestan Philharmonic Hall Orchestra. And for 10 years he was in charge of the Variety Symphonic Orchestra named after Y. V. Silantyev. Most recently he established the Dagestan Musical School for Gifted Children. He also founded a museum dedicated to the musical culture of Dagestan affiliated with the school. Kazhlayev has been recognized and awarded several times including the prestigious People’s Artist of the USSR and the Order for the Merit for Dagestan Republic. I hope you'll enjoy hearing this piece. Be prepared for some dissonance! Comments welcome. Piano: Baldwin Model L Artist Grand (6’3”) with lid fully raised. Recorder: Roland R-44 Mics: Matched pair of Earthworks TC-20 small diaphragm, omni-directional condenser mics in A-B configuration
A curious but likeable piece. It's almost as if someone decided to jazz improvise on the fourth Liszt Consolation.. Nice sound and phrasing.
Hi Andrew, I agree with your description of this No. 4 in E. It took some "getting used to". Yesterday I looked at No. 5. It looks weird to me, but I haven't ruled it out yet. I'm glad you liked my playing. Thanks! David Decided not to do Kazhlayev Six Preludes, No. 5. If I dislike a piece, I avoid it. But I've still done three preludes for pianosociety -- Nos. 1, 2 and 4. David
Hi David, Your short bio of Kazhlayev is appreciated as I have no recollection of hearing his music. The Prelude with it's jazz progressions and stunning vintage movie like soundtrack feel is a surprise from Dagestan for sure. You bring out many beautiful chords and twists and turns. Thank you for sharing. Kaila Rochelle
Hi Kaila, It's great to see you here again! I realize that you're had a busy schedule. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed hearing some of the music of Kazhlayev. Thanks so much for your comments on Prelude No. 4. So far I've shared three of his preludes here. I'm looking at another one which seems a bit weird at first reading, but it might be interesting learning it nonetheless. David
A note for Andreas -- Hi! As you probably noticed, I have now produced the third Kazhlayev piece as promised. This is No. 4 in E. It should allow them to move from "Various" and into the Composer's alphabetical list. As for No. 4, this has been uploaded to the Submission forum as required. I believe that you then establish the necessary links. Thanks for your help. If you need anything, just leave a note. I've started on yet another of these pieces, No. 5, but time will tell as they say. Best regards, David
I have added No. 4 to the Various page. Can you help me by writing a biography of Kazhlayev for the new Composer page?
Hi Richard I'm joyful that the Kazhlayev Prelude No. 4 has been removed from Various and are with Nos. 1 and 2. Also that's fine that you have worked on the links. Thanks! David
Yes. They are available here now: http://www.pianosociety.com/pages/kazhlayev_six_preludes/ The page for Kazhaleyev is here: http://www.pianosociety.com/pages/kazhlayev/ It could use a photo and any additional information as well as more recordings.
Hi Richard, Good work! I'll try to get a photo of Kazhlayev, and if I succeed, I'll see if I can upload it. Update: I've looked at photos. Our existing catalogue of composers have photos of uniform dimensions or close to it. The only photos of that size that I found all have stamps meaning "stock photos"-- a fee to be paid. It would be useful to learn where the photos in Composers were found and perhaps without requirements to pay fees. I'll ask Monica to see if she was here at that time and knows the source of the photos. UPDATE: Hi Richard, please scroll to the bottom of this page. A good photo of Kazhlayev there. You can now put it into the Composer's page. I'm glad to have helped on this. David. David
