You might compare his insane clarity and consistent rhythm to Glenn Gould. And then his genius use of rubato comes to mind.

I couldn't find very many performances I could give a link to, so you'll have to buy a cd or two if you really want to hear a lot of him.

As much as I loved this rhapsody, I quickly lost favor for it because many pianists try to one-up and play it more ridicously than previous piano greats. Helfgott is no exception. He begins the friska too quickly for my liking and then adds in his own flair. Just another typical pianist showing off his skills and ignoring the music, just like Horowitz.

Wow, that's a little bit of a harsh reception. I certainly agree with you on some levels, but everyone has to give a crow pleasing performance every once in a while. I just think the trills are amazing in that piece, and his shifts in tempo are genius.

On Horowitz, I wouldn't ever say that of him. Everyone has to put bread on the table, and when he was actually art, he was incredible.

Try that on for size. His refrain is and general dynamic control is amazing. He truly plays it like the Polish masterpiece it is.
