We went to hear Anne-Marie McDermott at Amherst College on Friday night. She played two Haydn sonatas, Prokofiev sonata no. 6 and the Wuorinen piano sonata that was written for her. She was wonderful. She seemed tense the entire time but that might just be part of her high energy style as a performer. The Wuorinen was interesting, classical in structure but contemporary in its language, and definitely uses the piano as a percussion instrument.

And when I opened the program to read the program notes, I noticed that the fine observations on the Haydn sonatas had been written by one Joseph Renouf!
