http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/tropic.html There's some really mind blowing satellite imagery of hurricanes (typhoons, cyclones). I'm nervously watching Hurricane Dean; (your's truly lives 20K from the Gulf of Mexico.) Louisiana and Mississippi had more than their fair share of tropical cyclones in 2005 with Katrina and then just three weeks later, Rita. Check out these cool, lifetime satellite movies of both storms. Water vapor, infrared, the last movie being an infrared/visible combo of 2005's Hurricane Katrina. http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... ina-wv.avi http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... ina-ir.avi http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... -visir.avi And here's the same with 2005's Hurricane Rita (which blew several of my house's windows in). http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... ita-ir.avi http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... ita-wv.avi http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/archi ... -visir.avi Pete
I saw on the news this morning that Dean had ransacked Jamaica and was heading for Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and eventually Mexico. I guess it's been largely passing you by then ?
I thought St. Martinville was up by Lafayette somewhere... hehe...I rode out Katrina about 5 miles from the beach in Gulfport, MS. It was great fun watching everything across the street get torn up. Of course, it sucked when I got back to my house which was one block from the beach.
As the crow flies, we're about 12 mi from the gulf. Yes, we can breathe a sigh of relief with the departure of Dean. During Hurricane Lili in 2002 I recorded a wind of 105mph sustained for two minutes. It was so loud, we couldn't communicate, no matter how loudly we yelled to each other, the screaming roar of the wind drowned us out. My very expensive wind gauge was destroyed in what i believe was a gust of 130mph. A 100kg outboard boat motor was lifted and carried 400m to the north, ending up in a pile of tree wreckage! So I know what category 2 wind sounds/feels like(the whole house quivered); scared the crap right out of me. I will never experience cat. 3,4 or 5 winds, because I will head north and away from the coast as though my life depended on it! Pete
