Thank you to those who donated to Piano Society in 2017.

Pfaul, Andreas

I was born 1971 in Marl and live in Germany. I started playing piano at the age of 11 and studied music in Cologne at the "Musikhochschule".  I am currently a teacher at a "Gymnasium" (secondary school) teaching the subjects "German" and "Music".

My first concert, which was played only by myself, was an evening with only compositions of my own (mainly for piano, but also for flute traversiere) in 1988.
I began studying music in 1989 at the "Musikhochschule Köln" as a "young student" (with 17 years). I studied composition, first in the class of Jürg Baur (*1918), later in the class of Krzysztof Meyer (*1943).

After my school-leaving examination I decided to study music and germanic philology for becoming a teacher at secondary school. In this context I studied piano in the class of Prof. Klaus Oldemeyer at the "Musikhochschule Köln", who was a very good teacher!

I made my State examination in 1998 and in this context also as a part of this examination in piano.

The piano was always my favorite instrument (even at the age of seven I started to learn the guitar). I played in several concerts until now.

My repertoire contains mainly works from the following composers until now: Bach (Well tempered piano-book, Goldberg-variations, Italian Concerto, English and French Suites, Inventions, Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue), Scarlatti (Sonatas), Mozart (Sonatas and Fantasies), Haydn (Sonatas), Beethoven (Sonatas, "Die Wut über den verlorenen Groschen"), Brahms, Liszt (mainly Annees de pelerinage), Chopin (Etudes, Ballads, Scherzi, Mazurken, Walzer and more), Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (mainly Songs without Words), Schumann (Kinderszenen and much more), Schuber (Sonatas, Impromptus, Moments musiceaux), Rachmaninof (some Preludes), Prokofief (diabolique suggestions), Scriabin (mainly Etudes until now, but I like also the Mazurkas and Preludes), Mussorgsky (Pictures of an exhibition), Debussy (Preludes, Petite Suite), Chatchaturjan (Toccata), Ravel (Jeux dŽeaux), Saint-Saens, Cesar Franck, Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue, Solo and four hands), Janacek (On the owergrown path), Schönberg, Jellinek.

Several times in the 1980 s I visited the "International Musicians Seminar" in Cornwall (England) and the master classes of Sandor Vegh and Andras Schiff, which were dedicated to chamber music.

In 1985 I won two prizes in the composition-competition of the Clara-Schumann Musikschule in Düsseldorf, for my compositions "Präludium" and "Fantasie" for piano.

In my school I regularly organize concerts, one of which is dedicated to chamber music. I am also a conductor of our school-orchestra.
