Pictures at a Exhibition
Mussorgsky composed his suite 'Pictures at an Exhibition' in 1884 in commemoration of his friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann (1834-1873). He took his inspiration from paintings and watercolours by Hartmann which were shown in an exhibition in the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg in early 1874. Actually it is proven for only 4 of the movements in the suite that they are based on works which were shown there; it is not sure what the other movements refer to, as many of Hartmann's works have been lost.
The Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the most important and original works in Russian piano literature. It has nevertheless become more popular in orchestral version. Of the orchestrations made by several composers, the most famous is the one by Maurice Ravel.
