The four etudes op. 4 were composed in 1902 when Szymanowsky was just 20 years old. Colorful, passionate and with a dynamic range from ppp to fff they are typical for Szymanowski's music of that time.
The most well-known of them, the Etude Op. 4 No.3 in B flat minor, was written for the pianist Ignazy Jan Paderewski, whose playing of the work brought much fame to the composer.
