It's been stuck in my head since yesterday and I can't nail it down. I'm not sure if it's part of symphony - a slow section, or if it's a piano piece. I just can't get it! :x I love it, though - this part of the piece anyway. It's played on lower notes - very sweetly. All I can actually write out here are the basic melody notes. I'm pretending that the RH is playing.

Start on E below middle C, then down to D, back up to E, F, G, A, down F, up G up again to E, down D, C, B, C.

If the LH plays, it would be a simple back and forth on low c to lower G, then b to the same G.

I hope that's enough so that someone can figure this out. It's driving me nuts! :)

How about a hint for rhythm?

I'll try. I'm not at home so I can't do anything fancy with my computer programs.

Here are the note/rhythms on the first two bars, that's really all I am sure about regarding the rhythm.

In 3/4 time

1 - Quarter note, dotted quarter note, eighth note

2 - eighth note, eighth note, quarter note, quarter note.

Much like Schumann.

I don't know how this tune popped into my mind or why, but I really wish I could identify it. Is that all you've got, Eddy? :( :(

It isn't an opera by Wagner is it? I think a part from the Mastersinger of Nurmberg goes something like that? Is that it?

Hi Riley,
Nope, that's not it, but thanks for trying. :)

If you know the notes and the rhythm then why don't you simply play and record it :?:

I thought I had. This is it here now. It's just a few seconds and may not be exactly the way the 'real' piece goes, but this is the melody that's in my head.

Hm, doesn't ring a bell. Not a very distictive melody IMO. Sounds vaguely Schumannesque or Wagnerian.

Could be late Beethoven.

Isn't that the B section of Macdowell's "An Old Love Story" from his Fireside Tales?

Wow, thank you so much, now my mind is at ease. (except I still don't know why I was thinking about the piece in the
first place.... :))

Oy, thinking about random melodies is an occupational hazard. When we did "Oklahoma!" last year, me least favorite song of this, one of my least favorite musicals, is "Many a New Day". That is the only song that would go through my mind. Drove me crazy (though that is a short trip and basically within walking distance.)

... 8) I guess it's the sudden richness in the timbre for that part or something, especially since you played it. Macdowell's melodies often get stuck in my head too... some of them are just too infectious and catchy to go away.

Yes, I do love low notes - and these are low melody notes played in thirds, which I think sounds really nice. Thanks again, I thought I was never going to learn what this piece was. I started to think that perhaps I had made up the melody..... :)
