Cringeworthy indeed, but:
Memory is a funny thing. Oh yes, I recognise that piece, it's ... it's ... er ... damn, I can't remember what it's called or where it's from, but I definitely do know it.
It happens to many of us from time to time. It's like recognising a person's face but not remembering their name.
The other week I was trying to remember which Chopin waltz Mompou took as the basis for his
Variations on a Theme of Chopin, and from which other Chopin piece the 10th variation,
Evocation, quotes. I do meanwhile know both answers, but it didn't help that the "waltz" was actually a prelude.
No, what made me cringe was not the memory lapse aspect, but the fact that this piece was referred to as a "song".
Grrr! I do hate it when everything has to be reduced to the level of pop culture terminology.
