I would guess a lot of it is inspired by Beauty and the Beast now that I really think of it...the wolves, the cold, the banishment from the castle, the solitude of the hero, the husband is a kind of "Gaston" character. In this case though, it is the woman who causes the downfall of the hero. If anything, it is sort of a "negative" to the Beauty and the Beast. Similar yet opposite.
Finally, what I wanted to get out of it was a classic perepiteia. In this way, it is more of a tragedy than a modern fairy tale.
