Post subject: TALENT SHOW!!! What should I play?
PostPosted: Mon Nov 27, 2006 10:53 pm
I am hard pressed on what piece I should play for the talent show at my school. I have in my repertoire, under or at a five-minute limit, Der Elrkonig, a Chopin c# minor waltz, and a mazurka (Chopin). Every other piece I know, that would interest "heavy-metal-loving grudgers", is over five minutes, but I could play the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 up to the last C# Major chord ( approx. five minutes into the piece). It ends naturally and those who haven't heard it wouldn't know that it has a "second part", FRISKA!! Anyway, please help me in deciding, I would like to play Der Erlkonig but I am open to here all of your opinions.
Merci.

It depends on how formal the event is. If it's informal, then the Liszt idea is pretty good. Regardless, choose the piece you play the best. What piece do you feel deep down is your favorite? Play that one.
The Erlking has wicked hard octaves; if you choose that one, be sure you can play it well.

Erlkonig. Sounds like a high school event. Skip the subtlety and go for the fury. Erlkonig's the one.

Have you ever read the lyrics? It's like something out of Marilyn Manson.

I can play Erlkonig pretty well, and I tried to find some one who could sing it and who had the right tone, but failed. But I had a friend who could play the violin and since I had the original Schubert song with the seperate lyric part, I tried to get her to play it with me; but it came out weird. Anyway, I think you all are right, Erlkonig hands down would be best. Thanks for the help.
But lets continue this thread a little more: If you were entering an audition for a talent show, waht would you play?
Say what you can play as of right now.

Chopin's, 12 Etudes Opus 10 and his "Heroic" Polonaise, maybe a Scherzo
Mozart's K330
Beethoven's Pathetique
Moonlight Sonata
Maple Leaf Rag, Joplin
Some Bach and Scarlatti

I would play a varied programme.

Given the fact that you are allowed only 5 minutes I would forget the Hungarian Rhapsodie because all the "talent" and "bombasity" is in the Friska section. The point of a talent show is to impress people and make them envious of your skill, so pick the piece with jaw-dropping runs, 120bpm, hands-a-blazing piece that you can comfortably play.
