Zimerman Plays Franz Schubert: Four Impromptus, Opus 90

Perhaps the antithesis of Lang Lang?

Zimerman holds a special place in my heart for his wonderful interpretations of Chopin's ballades. I have these videos you link on DVD and they are very good!

I saw him perform last year in Chicago. He played a Mozart sonata and Chopin's Ballad No. 4. He played flawlessly. Beautiful concert.

I have just ordered a CD of Krystian Zimerman and the Polish Festival Orchestra performing Chopin's Concertos. The samples were quite promising, though unfortunately they were all only one minute taken from the beginning of each movement, which, as you all probably know, is mostly orchestra, though I got a good taste of Zimerman's playing with the first minute of the 3rd movement of the F Minor. :) And really, the bits of the other movements speak well for the musicians in the group and Zimerman's leadership of them. Some of the movements are played a bit slower than I am used to, but the musicianship that is shown is quite above that which I have heard in other recordings of these concertos.

I will give a full report when the CD arrives. :)

I have that CD. Not sure where it is right now, probably in my car. Zimerman was the first one I heard play these. I must have listened to them each a dozen times. He's great.

I'm really enjoying this recording. I also like the fact that Zimerman conducts from the piano - I've played under a conductor that taught us that we could play well, even better, without him. It teaches you to pay attention to everything that's going on in the entire large ensemble, intimately, which lends a great deal to the interpretation of the piece by the ensemble as a whole. Wonderful experience.

I really like his interpretation of the Chopin Ballades. Just wonderful.
