I'm kind of going through a Medtner obsession right now, and I believe that Hamish Milne and Geoffrey Tozer are the only two pianists who have recorded and extensive amount of Medtner's wonderful works (not sure if either has recorded all of them). I know that Medtner isn't exactly one of the more popular composers, but if anyone has listened to the Milne and Tozer recordings, could you recommend which pianist performs Medtner's works better? I'm thinking about buying a few new CDs, and I don't know whether they should be performed by Milne or Tozer. Or, if no one has actually listened to their recordings, could someone possibly give me a link that compares the two pianists? I've tried looking all over the internet, and I can't find anything.

By the way, I have listened to Milne's complete collection of Medtner's fairy tales, which is excellent, but I haven't heard any Tozer so I don't have any comparison to base my decision.

It's funny you posted this just now. I was just checking out the Medtner by Marc-Andre Hamelin
on Amazon at the same time as you were writing your post. I'm listening to his recording of the
Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano and I think he's probably one of the best pianists I've ever heard.
Although it's a little expensive I would get the Hamelin over any other right now. But that's
just my opinion.

I realize that Hamelin did record all of the sonatas, but did he record the other Medtner works? Thanks for your suggestion; I have only heard Hamelin a couple of times, and it was on a some Youtube videos. His set of the sonatas is really expensive, but maybe I can earn some money to get it. I guess it would be nicer to have all of the sonatas in one place than scattered across multiple volumes. However, I still want to hear Medtner's other pieces, like his arabesques, dithyrambes, novellen, and improvisations. I'm not sure who's recorded the chamber music either, but hopefully someone has. So maybe I'll try to get the Hamelin for the piano sonatas, but does anyone have a suggestion on Milne and Tozer for the other works?

I've never herad Tozer's Medtner but I listened to some of Milne's LP's back when Medtner was a real rarity. That must have been, what, 25-30 years ago ? Even then Milne was completely authoritatve in this music, and it seems like he has stayed on the ball all these years, recently issuing the complete recording of the Skazki. From what I have read, Tozer is no less good technically, but a bit more allround and generalized, and not such a renowned Medtner specialist. I say you cannot go wrong with Milne although some of his recordings may be quite old already. Of course you can't go wrong with Hamelin either especially for the complete Sonatas.

I thought possibly Malcolm Binns has recorded some of them. As a 13year old boy in 1960 I heard him play 'Sonate Orageuse' when he was at the beginning of his career. I remember it well. He certainly used to play a lot of Medtner in is recitals. He's in his 70's now and has had a successful career, but maybe not too well known outside of the UK

As far as I know, Boris Berezovsky recorded some pieces of Medtner and plays Medtner often in his concerts. But to be honest, I know nothing about Medtner
