Yep, and there is a saying among programmers that whatever is hard to understand, should definitely remain so.

We seem to be a bit OT here though

Oh, wow... now it makes sense...

At first I thought, "Why is he saying 'good news'?" I thought it had some kind of deeper meaning, but I guess I was just too stupid to put my mouse over the link. Haha, now I feel so dumb. Thanks for the great news though! I think I speak for all of us when I say the next 2+ months will be very long for all of us.

!!!

MOMENT OF REALIZATION!

That website that just got password protected is actually run by a pianist from this site!

http://pianosociety.com/cms/index.php?section=638
Michael Hawley!

I'm not sure why this matters at all... but I just figured I'd share that with the world.

It's his collection for sure, I knew that (thought not that it was THAT big). I doubt whether he actually runs it.

Mike has never been on the site nor have we ever had contact with him. A former PS admin found his website and asked Mike for his permission to copy his recordings to PS, which he granted. That must be about 2-3 years ago now.

I suppose we could ask him if we (PS) can get the logon info if we promise to keep it between us. I will send him a mail about that.

I've sent him an email asking if PS members can get access to the site, Or alternatively, if we can replicate the scores on this site. See what he says about it. Will keep you posted.

Mike already responded and gave me the login. He does not mind that we share that in PS but he's wary that it will get out on the wide web and cause the site to be overloaded or hijacked again. It's a powerful machine at MIT but if dozens of sites start sucking all scores off it, it may not be able to cope.

I think it's best that anybody here who's interested let me know via private email and I send them the logon. I'd have to ask you the following things on behalf of Mike:

1) Keep the login to yourself. Do not pass it on to anybody, or before long all the world will
know it and we are back where we started.

2) Do be judicous with the site. Take only what you need and don't go and download everything
just for the hell of it. It may sound a nice idea but it is really a silly thing to do. There's about
15GB of data ! The more care we take with a site like this, the longer it can stay in business.

3) Please realize many scores here are copyrighted. The responsibility for download and use is
yours and yours alone.

4) If you have (or can create) any PDF's that are missing on this site, please submit them so that
we can make this site even better and more complete.

Thanks for your cooperation !

Chris

To say it in clear words: Please realize that if you download anything there, your IP is saved to a logfile. If a editor remarks that his copyright protected files are there, he will probably sent Mr H a cease and desist letter( if he's unlucky combined with a exorbitant financial claim :!: ) and if he wants, he can insist on getting the logfile and hand it over to the police, they will find out with the IPs who downloaded what and you'll get an unpleasant letter, too. Of course, this is the worst case scenario, and the consequences depend also on the laws of your home country but.....be prepared and don't tell you didn't knew....

This could happen theoretically although there is not obligation to keep or even use such a logfile. Also I believe the police wil other priorities than hunting down individuals guilty of a copyrighted download. I would not worry so much about that aspect. The future of the site is something to keep in mind though. It may help that it is not a public site.

If a publisher objects to their stuff being in this site they can only demad to remove it, not shut down the site (as I think was the case with IMSLP but the owner decide to shut down anyway).
