I am now enjoying the five (5) DVDs of Van Cliburn in Moscow, the earliest of which is the winner's concert in which he performs Rach 3 and encores!

Hi Eddy,

That recap of the Tchaikovsky Competition must take you back! In 1958 I was in 8th grade and by then an intermediate piano student. Van Cliburn's win caused not only a stir among pianists, but a nationwide sensation. I remember that when he returned to the U.S., he was given a ticker tape parade in NYC. After Sputnik, the U.S. needed a victory, and this was it. I have Cliburn's recording of the Tchaikovsky 1st Concerto and the Rachmaninoff 3rd, both conducted by Kyril Kondrashin. I've always liked his playing. Enjoy the videos, and Happy New Year to you!

David

Hi David,
I have no memory of the event because I was born in 1958! But having studied with two pupils of the Lhevinnes, I know the history quite well. As a youngster, I loved Van Cliburn's recordings. I remember when a neighbor, upon leaning of my interest in classical music and piano in particular, gave me the recording of Emil Gilels' recording of the Tchaikovsky 1! Boy is that fantastic too !
