I'll have Chris write a shell script instead using bzcat on bzipped-files.

I'm not even going to try and do this stuff from a shell script. You have no idea of the amount of
sorting and processing going on within stats. It would probably hang the system when attempted
from a script. Maybe I'll have a go at coding it in Java (assuming it does not have the 2GB restriction, which I am not sure about).
Or perhaps I should write a wrapper which once a day cleans up the access_log from useless information. It would shrink the log about 10 times.
That would help. Obviously stats only needs the lines that pertain to audio files.
But surely Apache must have some way of customizing the access log contents ?
