Testing out a Bosendorfer and some mics..

Completely self-indulgent really, but I think it has some nice moments.

The set-up is pretty great; very luscious sound! The improvisation is very idiomatic for the piano and a pleasure to listen to; it sounds a bit too majestic for a cocktail party though!

Your variety of figurations and stuff for improvisation is prodigious, but for criticism I think the harmonic rhythm of it is a bit too regular; it seems to stay at one harmony per measure even up till the cadenzas, so there's a drifty feeling to all of this (which might be your intention). Also, your cadenzas sound a bit too downward-biased, perhaps you could 'go up again', even ending off with a trill or something.

Anyways, good one. You seem to like the style a lot.

Wow - that's schmalz with a capital 'S'! Both my wife and I loved it, Andrew.

Do you get to "try out" Bosendorfers very often? I've had only one opportunity myself in a lifetime; I still remember it though it was 35 years ago.

Glad you've enjoyed it. Interesting point about the harmonic rhythm; it's not something I consciously thought about, but perhaps it is a function of me trying to provide the pianistic version of eating all the sweet trolley dishes, rather than something a bit more spiky. I got to spend quite a bit of time on the piano; it was the performance piano for the students at a masterclass I was attending. Nice to relax like this and do something with no pressure attached!
