Cleanup

I have done a massive cleanup of my old bad recordings. Removed 202 in total, which is basically everything recorded before medio 2007, and all organ recordings made on my old organ. As a result, I now no longer have any Chopin on the site, and no more complete Bach WTC, KDF, Orgelbuchlein and Clavier Ubung cycles. It will take me some time to re-record all this... if I ever succeed in that. But I feel better now that I have only decent recordings on the site which comply with current quality standards and for which I don't have to apologize. I hope that also justifies my earlier cleanup, and future ones, of other's recordings. The complete list is below. I hope I have not missed any.

@Monica: I noticed you never put your Iberia recording on the site. Any particular reason ?

Well it wasn't even 20% of my output (but will surely cause some dead links all over the world hehe). None if it was any good and it was all earmarked for re-recording. I could no longer be proud of such recordings, or of my large production with many complete sets. Also, I an prone to telling people to be more critical of their own playing so may as well put my money where my mouth is. There are many more that I am not really keen on, so maybe I'll wield the ax again, not sure yet. In any case I must certainly forget the silly idea of recording all of Bach... that is just never going to happen. Even completing the WTC seems too daunting now. I will redo the Chopin mazurkas for sure.

Chris, I´m also shocked :shock:

, but on the other hand I find your decision to improve quality likeable. But we also have to be a bit careful: if we put the level too high, we ourselve will not be able to achieve the high standard. :wink:

Btw, for me "high standard" means more to have a certain concept (of interpretation) respective a convincing and authentic performance of the pieces than playing absolutely "note-perfectly".

Oh I don't think PS and the world would be such a poorer place without my complete WTC

I will continue on it of course. But at the speed it's going now, it will take very long indeed to complete. of course I have some other repertoire to attend to as well.
You'll just have to wait a bit longer to pick apart my next installment... and then I can start all over again......

This is quite a long list, pity

Though having higher standards of quality for recordings on the site is a good thing, ofc.

I listened to your earlier recording of the organ chorale, BWV 690. Comparing it to your recent recording the stop sounds different and the playing is to my ears less confident. I don't know much about the standards of the site back then but it must have been a lot lower.

I looked at your list and am nearly speechless! Of course, something of this magnitude can only be a personal decision. I imagine that in one way it's sad for you to delete those recordings. I know it would be for me, so I admire your honesty and courage. On the other side of the coin, we can now look forward to your forthcoming new and replacement recordings.

Yes it was. In fact there was seldom a reason to reject something, whereas now we pick recordings to death and make people redo them. Despite some people may have left because of this, I believe the site is better for it.

I had this idea for a long time, but what triggered me is that I directed someone to my page saying "but don't listen to this one, and this one, and ....". I feel relieved that now I no longer need to apologize for any recording (although there are more that will probably go). I did hesitate for a while before throwing off all my Chopin Mazurkas, as some of them may have been decent, but if I redo them I may as well redo them all. It will not be a great hardship.

Hi Chris,

One thing that will help you, and I've noticed it before, is that you can dust off a piece you had learned in the past and bring it to life again in short order and work in your enhancements at the same time. For me, reviving an old repertoire piece is almost like relearning it--not a rapid process at all.

Knowing that you have that ability was probably part of your decision in eliminating those recordings. For me it would be incredibly daunting.

It is for me, too... I certainly will not be posting batches of dozens of recordings like in the old days.
