Bozidar Kunc: Improvisation on a Croatian folk tune, op.19

Postby micek » Mon Jul 24, 2006 7:02 pm

A little-known and (even in Croatia) very rarely performed piece by Croatian composer Bozidar Kunc (1903. - 1964.), inspired by elements of traditional Croatian music. I hope you wil enjoy it!

I really like it :) Reminds me Takacs's Rhapsody. Very nice, I can hear a bit of Balkans' folklore :)

I had high hopes of this, as I am a great lover of central European and Balkan music. But the piece did not, at least for me, live up to its promise. The first half is rather tentative, not sure where it will be going, it gets under steam after that but even then it seems to be a collection of excitable gestures more than anything else (well of course, it is called an improvisation so perhaps that explains a bit). The theme itself is not very memorable, or perhaps it needs repeated hearing to be that.

But let me add quickly, it's not your fault if it fails to convince ! You play it for all it's worth, and then some. And great that you make a case for unknown repertoire like this, which, as they say, 'deserves the occasional outing'. It reminded me a bit of the music of Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt, though not quite having that composer's discipline and inspiration.
