Capriol Suite

The Capriol Suite, composed by Peter Warlock in 1926, is a set of dances based on tunes in Thoinot Arbeau's Orchésographie, a manual of Renaissance dances. The composer's highly original and sometimes dissonant treatment of this music makes it almost an origonal composition.

Originally written for piano duet, it was later scored for both string and full orchestras, and in its string orchestra version, it has become one of Warlock's most enduringly popular works, as well as a staple work of the English string orchestra repertoire.

The splendidly idiomatic piano arrangement presented here was made by the English musicologist and composer Maucice Jacobson (1896-1976).
