Waltzes

Despite the fact that Brahms was exteremely fond of dances in general, and of the waltz in particular, the waltz does not feature prominently in his output. The reason could be that Brahms felt daunted by the natural waltz talent of the Strauss family. Brahms was known to greatly admire the waltzes of Johann Strauss, and on one occasion lamented that the Blue Danube waltz (An die schöne blaue Donau) was 'unfortunately not by Johannes Brahms'.

The waltzes that Brahms did write, are more romantic and nostalgic in character than the lighthearted compositions of the Strauss family.
